Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is the capital of Ecuador ́s Galapagos province. Its residents are largely devoted to fishing, tourism, agriculture, and other industries working with the environment that have helped them create a sustainable way of life. Various government agencies work together to help citizens gain an awareness regarding the impact humans have on this fragile environment and how to properly manage it. In 1866, at the age of twenty two, Manuel J. Cobbs, a Cuenca native, became the first settler on San Cristobal Island. He arrived on the island aboard two boats named Julian and Jose na Cobos. After disembarking in Shipwreck Bay with ten men, he established a sugar mill company called the “Hacienda El Progresso”, which was the island’s economic engine from 1879-1904.

Laguna El Junco is the only freshwater lake in the archipelago. It is nestled in the hollow of an extinct volcano and is home to many birds which use it to wash salt water off their wings. The Center of Interpretation explores both natural and human analysis on the Galapagos and is one of the most important educational sites on the islands. e paths behind it lead to an exceptional place to snorkel in a small bay called Cerro Tijeretas, whose name comes from the nesting colony of frigate birds locally known as tiránidos.
If you love surfing, San Cristobal has great waves, in addition to numerous excursion options for exceptional fishing and diving.
Beaches such as La Soledad and Puerto Chino are places of incomparable scenic beauty.
Another beach, Lobería, hosts great surfing and snorkeling in addition to a large colony of sea lions, the friendliest mammals in the archipelago.
You can also access sites by sea, among which we highlight: Kicker Rock (or its Spanish name, Leon Dormido), a volcanic formation of special interest to underwater species lovers such as divers and snorkelers, is a must visit.
While visiting Punta Pitt, you can see all three species of boobies and two species of frigate birds nesting in the same area. Cerro Brujo and Playa Carola are sandy beaches where you can find many species of flora and fauna. The Manglecito beach is an ideal place to observe both native and endemic species such as ducks and zayapas.
